Romare Berden, one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, created a collection of collages and water colors based on Homer’s poem “The Odyssey” in 1977.

This powerful series demonstrates an artistic connection between African-American culture and Greek mythology.

The artist infuses the poem’s epic characters with qualities familiar to his own experiences of strong beautiful women, jazz rhythms that set a pace for the mysterious adventures of a classic tale.

They are set against environments that tested one’s faith, strength of character and willingness to endure the unknown……..and then to finally find ones’ way HOME.
